Waves of Intervention

Waves of Intervention is based on Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention, to support and differentiate for all students. Teaching and learning planning is based on student data, to identify the different levels of support.

This model has 5 characteristics from addressing gaps in literacy: 

1. A school-wide, multi-level system of instruction 
2. High-quality classroom instruction 
3. Universal student screening  
4. Evidence-based interventions provided on a sliding scale of intensity  
5. Continuous, data-based progress monitoring

Utilising data derived from the DfE Phonics (R-2) and Spelling and Morphology (Years 3-6) Scope and Sequence placement tools enable teachers to strategically group students into ‘waves’ according to their specific year-level needs.

This approach facilitates the precise identification and addressing of individual gaps in students’ phonics and morphological understanding, thereby enabling educators to implement highly targeted instruction designed to maximise growth.

Progress is systematically monitored twice per term, ensuring that instructional responses and group allocations remain responsive to each student’s most current data and learning trajectory.
