Mathematics helps students recognise and explore the patterns and connections in the world around them. By thinking and working mathematically, they learn to solve problems, make informed decisions and build the confidence to tackle challenges in both familiar and new situations. Students build connections across mathematical ideas as they explore concepts in different ways, deepening their understanding of how and why mathematics works. Learning includes thinking time and structured talk, giving students opportunities to explain strategies, justify their reasoning, listen to others and refine their ideas as confident mathematical thinkers.
To support learning, teachers use a range of assessment tools to guide their teaching and planning, ensuring targeted instruction that meets the needs of all students. Along with a number of formative and summative assessment tools staff at Ingle Farm Primary school use the Numeracy check developed by the Department for Education in South Australia to gain snapshots of students’ foundational numeracy skills. The numeracy Check, an interview between teacher and student, uses prompts and hands-on tasks to assess the progress in counting, place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. Teachers use the results to adjust teaching and ensure all learners receive the support they may need as they learn the foundational maths concepts.
