Inspiring Innovation Through Inquiry Learning
At Ingle Farm Primary School, we believe the most meaningful learning happens when students are curious, engaged and empowered to explore real-world challenges. Our Year 4 and 5 Inquiry Project is a collaborative, student-led program that encourages children to think critically, solve problems creatively and make authentic connections across the Australian Curriculum.
Each term, students across our three Year 4 and 5 classes work together on a new inquiry that integrates multiple learning areas through hands-on investigation, collaboration and student voice. By exploring real-world topics, students take ownership of their learning, with the direction of each project shaped by their own questions, ideas and interests.
Last term's inquiry explored healthy eating and food sustainability, where students investigated where food comes from, how it is processed and how to interpret food packaging and nutritional information. Through a supermarket excursion, students compared products, identified healthier alternatives and then prepared potatoes using a variety of nutritious cooking methods, connecting classroom learning with practical life skills.
This term, students are participating in an exciting Shark Tank-inspired Inquiry Project, combining Design and Technologies with HASS: Business and Economics. Working through the design thinking process, students identify a genuine problem within their community or everyday life before designing an innovative product to solve it.
Throughout the project, students research their ideas, develop detailed design proposals, create business models, build prototypes and refine their thinking through feedback and collaboration. The project culminates in a Shark Tank-style presentation, where students pitch their inventions to an audience, demonstrating not only their creativity but also their communication, entrepreneurial thinking and persuasive presentation skills.
Our Inquiry Projects are designed to develop the capabilities that prepare students for future success. Alongside curriculum knowledge, students strengthen their critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, problem-solving and innovation skills, all while learning how to adapt, reflect and work effectively as part of a team.
At Ingle Farm Primary School, inquiry-based learning is about far more than completing a project. It is about nurturing confident, capable learners who are curious about the world around them and equipped with the skills to make a positive difference.
