Bringing Learning to Life at the Hahndorf Farm Barn
At Ingle Farm Primary School, we believe that the best learning experiences happen when students can connect classroom knowledge with the world around them. Our Reception students recently enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Hahndorf Farm Barn, where they brought their learning about farm animals and descriptive writing to life through hands-on experiences.
Throughout Term 2, students in Rooms 7, 8 and 9 explored the fascinating world of farm animals while developing their descriptive writing skills. They learned how to create detailed descriptions by using rich vocabulary, including words that describe colour, size, shape, texture and number, helping to make their writing more engaging and meaningful.

Although the winter weather meant there were fewer opportunities to explore the outdoor areas than originally planned, the wonderful team at Hahndorf Farm Barn went above and beyond to ensure our students still had an unforgettable experience. Their generous hospitality saw a range of engaging farm activities relocated into sheltered areas, allowing students to safely interact with the animals while staying warm and dry.
Students loved milking Daisy the cow, cuddling fluffy chicks and feeding hungry lambs, creating memories that would later inspire their classroom writing. These authentic experiences gave students a wealth of ideas, vocabulary and sensory details that simply cannot be replicated through books alone.
Back at school, students used their adventure as the inspiration for descriptive writing pieces about Daisy the Cow and our day at the Farm Barn. They proudly worked on "bumping up" their sentences by adding descriptive language, creating detailed pieces that reflected both their learning and their excitement from the excursion.
Experiences like this demonstrate how excursions enrich learning by providing meaningful, real-world connections to the curriculum. Through hands-on experiences, students build stronger vocabulary, improve their writing, develop confidence and deepen their understanding of the topics they are exploring in class.
At Ingle Farm Primary School, we are committed to creating engaging learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning. By combining classroom teaching with authentic experiences, our students are empowered to become confident communicators and enthusiastic learners.
